The Manchester College

The Manchester College logoThe Manchester College is one of Europe’s largest and most progressive Further Education Colleges, providing excellence in learning and training at the heart of the community across Manchester and beyond. With a powerful national voice and a commercial strategy that embraces today’s changing educational landscape, the College is dedicated to service excellence through learning and improving the life chances of its students. Following the announced retirement of Peter Tavernor, after 15 years in post, Wickland Westcott was invited to recruit his successor, based upon their track record of delivering commercial skills into the public sector environment.

The challenge was daunting given the changing dynamics of the Further Education market with reduced funding from traditional sources and the need for broader commercial and strategic thinking to maximising new revenue streams, whilst supporting the needs of the community. It was clear from the outset that the College’s Board had embraced this challenge and wanted to attract applicants with the foresight, commercial instinct and boldness of approach that matched theirs.

Following briefings from a range of stakeholders a detailed search was carried out targeting board level individuals with proven leadership experience across both the private and public sectors. The key focus of the search was to provide a diverse range of exceptional candidates with the commercial, leadership, political and stakeholder skills required whilst demonstrating clear synergies with the values and mission of the College.

A thorough and fully transparent process was delivered, including psychometric assessment and extensive referencing, giving the Board of Governors a strong shortlist of Chief Executives from the Private, Health and Education sectors. Running in parallel with this assignment was the appointment of the Deputy Chief Executive/Finance Director which again followed a similar process and focused heavily on the College’s commercial needs. The new Chief Executive will be making the transition from the private sector to join The Manchester College and will be followed by his new Deputy Chief Executive who will arrive with a mix of Private Sector and Further Education experience.

“We have received an excellent service from John Dodd at Wickland Westcott in relation to the recruitment process for the Chief Executive and Deputy Chief Executive/Finance Director roles. Both processes were executed in a responsive, professional and transparent way with the necessary rigour and attention to detail required. We can recommend Wickland Westcott to you for your recruitment needs” Sarah Wilde, HR Director, The Manchester College.
