Growth through people

HewdenHewden is the UK’s market leading plant hire company, supplying a wide range of products and services to customers across diverse industrial sectors.  Led by a dynamic and highly commercial team, the business has a clear growth strategy based on the provision of differentiated, customer-centric solutions and the delivery of exceptional levels of service.  Core to this strategy is the development of a strong culture with a focus on people engagement, innovation, empowerment and results-orientation.

In order to realise its ambitions, the company recognised the need to diversify and further strengthen Hewden’s talent pool through the recruitment of a number of senior operations leaders.  Essentially, the Board made a declaration of confidence to the business and the rest of the market by committing to invest in people as part of its growth agenda.  The brief to Wickland Westcott was to identify high calibre candidates who would fit with the low bureaucracy, collaborative and informal culture at Hewden and who could propagate the company’s focus on safety, efficiency and customer service through engagement with people.  Ideal candidates would bring fresh thinking and a new perspective, adding to the company’s bench strength for succession planning purposes.

Having gathered perspectives from a wide range of Hewden stakeholders, Wickland Westcott went to market with a strong message promoting Hewden’s exciting growth plans, whilst seeking interest from candidates with a range of backgrounds who could contribute to the ongoing success of the business.  The focus was on the identification of candidates with a strong pedigree, gained in a multi-site, service-oriented sector, where success is dependent on the ability to translate a commercial message into an operational plan through clear and collegiate leadership.  Culture fit was a key requirement and candidates with onward potential were of particular interest.  Having sourced and interviewed a significant body of candidates, Wickland Westcott delivered a strong shortlist featuring individuals with retail, wholesale, facilities management, car hire and manufacturing backgrounds.

Shortlist candidates met with members of the Board and senior leadership team, reflecting the company’s collaborative approach to decision making.  The strongest candidates were then provided with an opportunity to experience the operational environment by visiting one of the company’s depots.  This comprehensive approach enabled the business to assess the capability and ‘fit’ of a wide range of candidates whilst offering prospective employees a real insight into the company and its people.  The assignment resulted in the appointment of a particularly strong individual from the facilities management sector, with an exceptional track record and excellent future potential.
